If you haven’t heard about this game, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is a unique fighting game with many video game characters available in the roster, from characters such as Mario to even Sonic the Hedgehog. This game on the Nintendo Switch is a very fun one, especially if you have friends at the same skill level as you, as it makes the game more tense. This game is one of the most unique and fun fighting games for many reasons, with my personal favourites being:
1. The roster. You can play as many video game characters, with many you’ve probably heard of, even including characters from other fighting games such as Ryu & Ken from Street Fighter. There’s such a diverse variety of characters with each one containing a special moveset, making it exciting to see what each one brings to the table, and how different fighting styles clash with each other. Also, you’ll be seeing characters together you’ll have never expected to see, such as Sonic and Mario.
2. The story mode. This game does have a single-player mode, with quite a good story itself, but the gameplay is quite fun as well, as with every battle you win, you receive different “spirits”, changing how you play the game in many ways such as increasing your damage output or decreasing how much damage you take. It’s a very engaging mode that did give me quite a good time playing it, and I’m sure people who try this mode will enjoy it too.
3. The damage system. It has a unique way of registering damage for its fighters, where instead of having the normal health bar that causes the fighter to die upon reaching zero, each fighter has a percentage on their screen. This percentage increases with every attack the fighter receives, and the higher the percentage, the higher your chance of being launched off the screen with the next attack. Immediately making your character burst into a bright beam of colour to indicate loss if you do. Of course, you can switch the damage system to retain the normal “health goes to zero” mode if that’s what you’re used to, but it’s a rather unique system that makes this game stand out from most other fighting games such as Street Fighter.
Overall, again, I believe Super Smash Bros is a very unique fighting game that definitely has me returning to it quite often, and I think it’s worth a try.
