The Marvels Review

Vera

My dad tried to convince me to watch the Marvel movies for years but I was not interested in them, I refused to watch something filled with conflict in my opinion. A few years down the line, I watched the movie “Blay. Widow” with my cousins without realising it was part of the Marvel Universe and I LOVED it! When I casually mentioned it to my dad, he freaked out while ranting about how I never listened to him! One lesson I learnt was that I should listen to his opinions, BUT only when it comes to movies :)

I continued watching all the movies and they were all so amazing but the one that stood out for me was “The Marvels”. The film revolves around Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson) AKA Captain Marvel whose powers get entangled with her niece whom she hadn’t spoken to for a long time, S.A.B.E.R astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and her super-fan living in Jersey City, Kamala Harris (Iman Vellani) AKA Ms Marvel after she reclaims her identity from the Kree. Some unforeseen consequences lead her to an abnormal wormhole related to a Kree mutiny.

I thought this movie resonated with me the most because the leads were all women holding power over the other characters, making it inspiring for all the girls in the world to make their dreams a reality just like Kamala did (she wanted to fight with Captain Marvel). Although “The Marvels” broke negative box office records by ranking as the lowest-grossing movie in the MCU, it paved the path for the many female-leading movies coming out soon!
